MIA: Mom In Action

it’s been a wild five months. wild. five. months.

we welcomed our second son, miles, into our lives.

said good-bye to our wonderful friends of the pacific northwest.

packed up our stuff.

moved from washington state to the bay state…. hello snow and that boston accent.

received a wonderful welcome “back home” from friends and family.

bought our first home.

moved into that home.

unpacked stuff.

our older son, jax, started preschool.

so yes, i’ve been a mom in action… of course with my camera in hand. i promise a wrap-up of the last few months will be on the post soon… you know, right after i unpack a few boxes, change diapers, do the potty dance, and  kiss my husband.

upstaged by my two-year old: part 2: make those eyes shine

“Make Those Eyes Shine”

It’s just a little saying that my mom and dad used to say to me. It was our own little version of “break a leg”. For those of you that don’t know, I used to model, sing, & dance when I was younger.

(my first head shot)

It was actually an audition for Annie 2 on Broadway in 4th or 5th grade that led to me becoming a television reporter. The local media was at the auditions and chose me for an interview. I was hooked. Forget about Broadway… I wanted Rockefeller Center! Fast forward to 2001. I just graduated from Syracuse University and landed a job at WENY-TV in Elmira, NY… yes ELMIRA!

(first anchor picture… btw you are taken more seriously if you wear a red suit)

After a year working at WENY, I was promoted to morning anchor  and my mom sent me these.

My Nannie Fay’s pearls with a “Make Those eyes Shine” as well as this note from my mom

I still keep the notes tucked in the pearl case. With every new job, I’d open the case and read my mom’s letter, “Make Those Eyes Shine.” Through the years, those words became a lot more than just a reminder to sell it… those words are more like a reminder from my mom and dad telling me to take a breath and just be myself.

On Wednesday, I whispered those four words to Jax as we went for his first modeling gig. I don’t know if it was more for him or for me.

Jax was chosen to model for the Tamara Lackey/CreativeLive workshop. I promised to post some behind the scene pics, but I totally got caught up in making sure Jax was smiling, making sure I was smiling, making sure his shirt was pulled down… my shirt was pulled down… all the things I’m sure all parents go through when doing their family portraits. It was a great experience to be on the other side of the camera…  I should mention there were 3 cameras. In addition to Tamara’s camera, the CreativeLive team was also videotaping us. Jax was such a trooper. It was cold and rainy and he didn’t shed one tear! Thank you Tamara and CreativeLive Team!  It was neat to see you in action and try to learn a few tricks! We can’t wait to see the sure-to-be amaaazing pictures!

(Mobile pic I took of Jax before the shoot)

(one from the shoot that CreativeLive snapped. You can kinda see Jax in the background)

The workshop begins today. Here’s a link in case you want to check it out.

upstaged by my 2-year-old… yes it’s true

so i took a leap of faith. i put myself out there in cyber world and sent in a video for the creativelive tamara lackey portrait workshop here in seattle. six lucky photographers from around the world would be chosen to participate for the three-day workshop. i kinda waited until the last minute, made a video, and crossed my fingers.

take a look…

Danielle Larcom Entry for CreativeLive contest

bad news… i didn’t get selected. but that cute little 2-year-old sponsor at the end… jax… he did!!! he is one of the lucky little ones to be photographed by tamara…. HOLLA!!!

so yes, i was totally upstaged by my 2-year-old and i love it!

tamara and the creativelive crew will be taking the boat to bainbridge this wednesday. i’ll try to sneak some mobile pics to share.
